Do you really need a website?

Monday, April 2nd, 2007

The answer is, “No.” Yes, I said, “No.” Surprised? Probably so, given the fact that we are a technology company which designs and develops websites and customized software. Then why not “Yes?” Simply because our existence is based upon doing what IS BEST for OUR CLIENTELE. And for some, a web presence is unnecessary… a waste of resources. Let me explain.

The need (ie. benefit) of acquiring a web presence is based on a wide range of criteria: the type of business you have, its location, the people you service, the amount of foot traffic that passes through it, etc., etc. Are you a service provider, a manufacturer, or a retailer? Are you located in a rural area, a small town, or a big city neighborhood?

If you operate a mom-and-pop store or small grocery that caters almost exclusively to a walk-in clientele, it wouldn’t matter if you were rural, small town or urban, your chances of drawing customers from afar are slim. So chances are you do not require a web presence. The same holds true for such businesses as: hair salons, pizzerias, sub shops, local pharmacies, neighborhood hardware stores, small clothiers and the like… unless… And this is very important, you believe that your product is so outstanding that you can attract an ever-widening audience.

For example, let’s assume that you are confident that you make the absolute best pizza in your neighborhood. You know it. You feel it strongly. Your customers have told you so. and, as we all know, the customer is always right. You will have to decide if you will be content in continuing to service your “regulars” or want to take a shot at getting the folks from all over town to head for your place to satisfy their pizza cravings. This is a difficult decision. One that is hard to make without some expert advice. Your technology company must be capable of providing that advice to help you resolve the dilemma in YOUR best interests. They should be able to ask all the right questions and use their expertise to determine if your business is ready to expand and if a website is the best means of accomplishing that expansion. In many such instances their recommendation, after careful scrutiny, should be, “No.” Yes, that’s right. THEY SHOULD NOT BE AFRAID TO SAY, “NO” if the circumstances warrant that answer.

However, in the event that their answer is “Yes.” You should be able to rest assured that they will build you a website that will be eye-catching, informative and highly effective. Their website should make you proud. And It should provide your business its maximum chance for success in a competitive market. by setting you a notch above the rest.
