Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
If customers cannot find you, what good is your web site?
Search engine optimization is a little-understood yet extremely important topic. Once your company or organization has established a web site, people need to be able to find it. Web site optimization is a technique that enables the site to rise higher in search engines, allowing you to reach your target market ahead of many (if not all) of your competitors.
The problem
All companies want to appear at , or at least near, the top of their product category on a search engine. For example, if a potential customer types in the phrase "garden supplies" on a search engine, several hundred company names will appear. If you happen to be a seller of garden supplies, you would certainly want your company information to appear, let's say, 4th or 9th on the list rather than 162nd. A high ranking such as 4 or 9 can be achieved in a variety of ways, some of which are ethical and some of which are not.
A technique called "spamming" may be used to essentially prevent companies from getting "hits" (ie. search results) from a targeted audience. This will place the companies that resort to such tactics higher on the search list while moving others - competitors - toward the bottom. Such companies may be out of state or even in a foreign country, yet their ability to manipulate the search algorithm through clever URL and file naming and META tag spamming can "squeeze" smaller local companies entirely out of the competition. It goes without saying that this method of optimization is unethical and frowned upon by search engine providers who wish to maintain a level playing field.
